Register for health insurance

On the ameli website for international students.

How to do it

  1. 1Go to etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr and create your application to join French Social Security.
  2. 2Fill in your details: identity, country of birth, email address, postal address in France, phone number and the start date of your cover (the date your studies begin at your institution).
  3. 3Upload the required documents online, legible and complete.
  4. 4Write down the provisional social security number the site gives you and download your provisional certificate of affiliation.
  5. 5Follow your file in your personal space and re-upload any document flagged as missing or not compliant.
  6. 6Once you are registered, download your final certificate, apply for your carte Vitale and open your ameli account.

What you need

  • Passport (or national ID card)
  • Valid residence permit (your VLS-TS)
  • Certificate of enrolment for the current year
  • RIB or IBAN for your reimbursements
  • Civil status document: full copy of your birth certificate or an extract showing parentage

Tips

  • Keep your provisional number and provisional certificate safe: you will use them at the doctor's and the pharmacy in the meantime.
  • Scan your documents in good quality before you start: an unreadable document holds up your file.
  • As soon as you have your ameli account, activate it: this is where you track reimbursements and do other procedures (complémentaire santé solidaire, certificates).
