How to do it

  1. 1Start by checking whether you can get the complémentaire santé solidaire: it depends on your income and requires a valid residence permit.
  2. 2If you are eligible, apply online from your ameli account, or send form cerfa n°12504 to your health insurance fund.
  3. 3If you are not eligible, compare several complementary health contracts (mutual insurers, insurers) against your real needs: GP visits, pharmacy, dental, optical, hospital.
  4. 4Once your cover is in place, show your third-party payment card (or certificate) together with your ameli certificate at the doctor's and the pharmacy.

What you need

  • Your social security number and access to your ameli account
  • Your valid residence permit
  • Proof of income (for the complémentaire santé solidaire)
  • Your housing details

Tips

  • The complémentaire santé solidaire can be free or come with a small contribution depending on your income: check this before paying for a private contract.
  • Being enrolled at an educational institution is one of the situations covered by the residence condition: do not assume it is too early just because you have just arrived.
  • The complémentaire santé solidaire lasts one year and must be renewed: note the end date.
